hit me with your best shot

Hankshaw
Nothing Personal

oh hankshaw...how i love to hate you. or hate to love you...one of those. anyway, from the bowels of the same city that brought you scrog and assuck, the devil's asshole (tampa, florida), came this utterly delightful band. if you like your punk extra poppy, or your rock really peppy, you might just like hankshaw. actually, if you like your boys to sound like girls, you will like hankshaw. aside from the tight musicianship and hooky as hell music, the defining characteristic of this band is harold's singing. this isn't your typical "emo" crybaby singing or the painful scream-singing of all the other bands in this "genre," harold belts out some seriously lovely girly-ass vocals. but in a good way. there were time when people actually thought it was a girl singing. i've been at shows where people were disappointed not to see a sweet young girl take the stage. instead, it's some dude named harold! anyway, these guys were great. and i use the word "were," not only because i think they are no longer really doing much, but also because they turned into something completely differet from what these albums represent. this was their first big full length album. its catchy as hell.

Hankshaw
7"

a 2 song 7". i can't remember if this came out before nothing personal or after, but it features my favorite song of theirs, "maple." its a peppy little number that always reminds me of driving my car. maybe because i had it on a cassette mix that i listened to in my car alot. that could be the reason.

Hankshaw
Everyday I Wish You Harm EP

as the title and art suggests, you can probably figure out what this ep is all about. you definitely notice a progression in the songwriting on this thing. it gets way less punky. i really thought they were gonna hit it big with this one. doghouse was putting out some good records at this time, and it seemed like this one just got overlooked. who knows. features a wicked pat benetar cover.

Hankshaw
EP

so yeah, i put this record out. and it burned me. at the time i was super into the harm ep and the 7". they were random acquaintances of mine and when they were on tour with elliot, i went to go see them in nyc. i chatted with them about doing something and they were super excited about it. so we made the plan. i threw them some money to record. they eventually sent me a dat tape with the following songs, and then i never heard from them again...haha. when i listened to these songs, i'll be honest, i was disappointed. i wont say they are bad, because they are not. they are actually terrific songs, but its just not the same band i loved. it is some super dawsons creek soundtrack kinda stuff. unbeknownst to me at the time, they were going through some changes. somewhat of a crossover phase into "mainstream" or proper radio songs...who knows. i even tried to roll with it. when the cd came out, i repeatedly pleaded with them to let me put together a promo package i could send to radio and magazines and everything. but my pleas fell upon deaf ears. they just werent interested anymore. after the cd came out, i seriously never heard from them again. not a word. the only people at all interested in the cd were people from tampa. i legitamately sold maybe 200 of them and the rest i gave away. i even sent a box of 100 to ebullition and asked kent to please put them in packages he was sending out...FOR FREE! a month later i got the box back and a message from kent, "sorry." haha. amazing. i sent yet another message to the band saying i will pay all the shipping if they want the cds. i will send them the remaining 500 for them to do with what they please, i just need them out of my house! nope. never heard a word. the box still sits on my shelf. fucking hell.

download

from what i've understood. they released another album after this. i think they do movie soundtracks now. or they just mess around in the studio or something...who knows. i even think they moved to atlanta. wierd. well these records are still good anyway. i hope you enjoy.

Hey, I've been out of it for awhile.
Hope you guys are doing well. The blog seems pretty busy.
I have a couple of personal requests and maybe some of you might be able to help.

• Cinemechanica - any album.
• The Union of a Man and a Woman - any album
• Uzeda - "Stella"

As a token of my appreciation:
Some Shellac singles:

(1993) The Rude Gesture

(1993) Uranus

(1994) The Bird Is The Most Popular Finger
http://d.turboupload.com/de/1796617/97y6u318mg.html

I'll make a proper post in the near future.

Blogger Destroyer said...

Thx man, that would be awesome. I got only 2 Cinemechanica songs from the martial arts album. I was listening to them yesterday intensely.
The new Uzeda can be streamed on the Tn'G site and sounds amazing. One of the best things I've heard lately. If you could share, I'll be very happy this weekend.

By the way I got a few concers this weekend.
Tonight I'll see Sonic Youth perform Daydream Nation. Should be awesome! I can't wait!. They are also performing a free concert Saturday in Sta. Monica which is very close to me but I think I want to have the Daydream Nation memories stick longer in my mind.

Sunday Girls Against Boys will perform "Venus Luxury".

I love this new trend of performing full albums. So many old bands have great early albums and could do the same...

yeah they (BUBD) came to my town to play a show with my band and the club (an art gallery) had "forgotten" there was a show that day and no one came to open up, although i had my suspicions that the guy who set up the show failed to tell the people we were having a show. so we ended up eating pizza with them.

so I just recently found this blog through a friend, and can't express how stoked i was just running through the first few posts, much less the impressive backlog and the comments-a-plenty. it's more than just the readily available hard-to-find stuff, and good recommendations (btw La Quiete = sonic gism, no joke, i had chills it was so good, so good, so that's part of it, sure), but it's more than that. let me explain.

i spent my high school years and some early college in Santa Barbara, CA, and cut my teeth on so many of these bands posted here, that reading you guys is like being back in SB all over again (i moved away to oregon, and now live in chicago). a lot of these bands I saw play week in and week out in steve aoki's living room, the Pickle Patch; I would ride my skateboard down to buy their records off Kent personally at Ebullition, even reviewed a couple albums for heartattack (Decay, and some others). kent and lisa were an integral part of the scene that was my life during those years, and, so to keep it short, reading all this stuff and rediscovering some of the records i'd either completely lost or never owned by many of the bands I saw during those years in the 90's is freaking amazing, simply put. and you guys obviously know your shit.
so, huge Kudos, and if I ever see any of you i'll be buying the first round (unless you're sXe, then i guess something else will have to work, haha).

Shadowpuppetmaster -

thanks man, youre words mean alot. this is why i started this blog. in a sea of internets and intrawebs i wanted to find people who shared some of the memories of these bands. at the least, i wished to reach some new people, but having people like you and the others who have become regulars here has fully realized what this blog was intended for.

most of us grew up 'round that time, when finding all these records was hard, something you had to search for, flip over a few rocks, know the right people or be in the right town. finding a band that spoke directly to you was like discovering fire. it is clear you feel that way too, so we are happy to share in all of this with you. and the bands still exist. thats the best part. different people, different names, different sounds, but the same burning passion of life. I think La Quiete is a good example of what i mean...

so thanks again, and thanks for all the Shellac. My favorite Steve Albini band. ^_^

ok gotcha...yea get them all in and let me know whats missing...I will up them before I delete all these!

I fixed that problem with groo, I just let the rar program split them into volumes for me, like I should have done with GI Joe. Groo is broken down into 4 series...versions 1 thru 4. Version 2 was the longest run, it had like 150 issues I believe. I also have a lot of extras by Arogones, lemme know if you are interested in any of those.

The Problem with Hankshaw is that they were a very lazy bunch of whiners. I'm sorry that either Harold or Johnny (whoever was supposed to be in touch with you) didn't do there part. That sort of disrespectful wasting of other peoples time and efforts lead to the ultimate demise of the group. We did record another record called "King Kandy" it's on CDBABY.com. It's pretty out there. The only person in Atlanta is me and I'm playing with The Hiss - everyone actually pulls there weight! Take care

hey blend, do you have the hankshaw download for their unreleased song "Everyone thinks you're great" from the emo philips: from tampa to eternity?

also, i really like the 2000 hankshaw ep but i can understand why it seems bad, as it turned into a more emo like style, rather than staying into a more poppy punk as Nothing personal

how come hankshaw broke up?

also, do you have the lyrics to the hankshaw ep 2000?
