Sunny Day Real Estate

Sunny Day Real Estate - Diary (1994)

Sunny Day Real Estate - LP2 (1995)

Sunny Day Real Estate, to me, is a moment in time. It is something to be cherished. I cant help but remember those years, from 94-96, when Sunny Day took me everywhere. It is impossible to separate even the idea of Sunny Day Real Estate from my own subjective time spent in the mid 90's.

So with that, I will not inundate you with subjectivity, nor will I attempt being more objective, for it just doesnt feel natural, to step back from something that remains so close to my heart.

I will let these two albums speak for themselves, as they were intended. Enjoy.

Can't say enough about SDRE in their classic period. I stumbled on them late and by accident, long after I'd abandoned most interest in hardcore and post-hardcore. Sunny Day were a re-affirmation, for me, of the original meaning and purpose of the music, going back to Embrace, Rites of Spring, and the Hated. Yet they played with a new level of sophistication, harmonically and rhythmically. I was always a little disappointed in their movement towards prog-rock, but Enigk is so multi-talented and ambitious that he was never going to be satisfied with one sound.

yeah, i feel the same about their prog leanings. How It Feels has some great songs, but The Rising Tide left me cold. I think Dan Hoerner left before Rising Tide and I think he was a big part of their sound....

Although, speaking of SDRE's prog evolution, it has to be said that the first Fire Theft album has one really amazing song on it, "It's Over." I think this is one of the best things Enigk ever wrote; the chorus especially hearkens back to SDRE's classic period. Most of the rest of the album is god-awful, though.

Hope you get these links back up, because my copy of Diary is long lost. And thanks again for posting Pitchfork; I'm so glad to have "Burn Pigs Burn" back in my possession.
