Rain Like the Sound of Trains - Waiting for the Water (1994)

Rain Like the Sound of Trains were a DC band comprised of members of Soulside, Beefeater and Verbal Assault. Their sound strays from the typical discordant sound of DC punk at that time instead incorporating a heavy dub reggae vibe and a heavy jam / funk vibe. The music still had its heavy DC inspired moments but ends up sounding like a rougher, more hardcore and more bluesy version of the Red Hot Chili Peppers of all things. Bass work by Dug Bird from Beefeater is what the main attraction is here. The bass is fluid and ever present. Guitar work, by Josh LaRue, is quick and funky, keeping time while retaining a sense of that early Dischord melody. Josh LaRue would go on to start the Sorts and Sea Tiger and also played in Sevens with Bobby Sullivan (vocals - ex Soulside). The lyrics deal with mostly political topics and the band were very interested in Eco-political consciousness, with benefits going to various grass roots Ecological groups.

always loved this band. they became inifinitely better with the addition of bobby sullivan on vocals and bongos. there were a few years where i was obsessed with everything rlt/sot - sorts - sevens - the boom - related, during the wierd dc jazz rock crossover phase. and speaking of the the awesome sullivan vocals, bobby's brother mark sang for the best band in the world, kingface...as well as sevens. always thought sevens was a little goofy, but they still had some "tasty grooves." for those of you keeping track, the "best bands in the world" so far are swiz, soulside, kingface and iconoclast. but i'm sure i will add more as your posts become better and better.

sevens was great i thought. i mean it was pretty damn granola hippy style, with reggae/rock style songs about vitamin D and being kind to the earth and whatnot. when i spoke to josh larue i told him how much i liked rlt/sot and sevens and he just kind of sighed and shook his head in embarrasment. haha. but man i love me some sullivan brothers. some of the best frontmen and singers in "post-punk-hardcore," haha, if that means anything. I'll give any of their bands a shot. bobby was in a band called seven league boots which was a more "rock" version of sevens. last i heard he was living in a teepee somewhere in the woods. mark got kingface back together for a little while and released a new 7" a few years ago, but now he owns and runs a book publisher/store in nyc. if you ever see him, tell him kingface ruled. he is the nicest guy ever.
