Polar Bear Club (2006)
The Redder the Better
Demo
Okay this is a band seriously everyone (if you had to ask yourself "me?" then the answer is yes, you too) should download, listen to and BUY asap! Based out of towns up and down the east coast ( Rochester/Syracuse/Boston/Tampa ) and featuring current members of Another Breath and ex-members of Ensign, this band is neither really hardcore and not exactly experimental either. They walk a fine line between melodic Texas is the Reason style post-hardcore ("His Devotee" off the Redder the Better, "Overflow" off of the demo) and heavier, sometimes epic feeling riffs sort of like Antenna era Cave In ("Election Day" and "Most Miserable Life" off of The Redder the Better). This band is one of those that you could listen to and disect every vowel, every syllable and every note or just put it on as backing music to something else, it fits both needs. Incredibly uplifting lyrics and vocals round out what can only be described by me as a nearly repetoir. This is one of my favorite newer bands still putting things out. If any of you get the chance to see this band you should do so. They're putting out a new full length on Red Leader Records sometime in the fall or early winter entitled Sometimes Things Just Disappear.

awesome. i have been wanting to hear this band, and now even more the way you described it...
thanks meng...
Nice collection of uploads. Keep up the good work..BTW where do you find most of this stuff?
i think most of us own most of the stuff we up...
though i only speak for myself... and most of this blog has been my posts until this summer...
google is a great way to find stuff and all the blogs on the right, under Friends and Lovers. check em out... cool people cool tunes..,
thanks for the comment..
okay. Thanks, but I meant like where do you hear about these bands? I've heard a few of them but some of them, like these guys, I've never even heard of.
well...I first heard about Polar Bear Club through Punknews.org. THey reviewed their ep and gave it 5 stars or some shit like that. So I had to get it. ANd it rules. But you can find bands on purevolume..or here. We will introduce you to some good music.:)
Oh, and I can't wait for this full length...I hope they don't become too polished or mainstream. But I have hope!
Just my opinion, but I think these guys already are a little too polished. I really wanted to like this band, especially since (I assume) they named themselves after an awesome Silent Majority song, but these guys are kind of slick for my tastes.
But I can imagine a lot of people digging these dudes.
oh, i see. as far as alot of these bands.. .well, again, the blogs on the right... the ones on the top are the ones i frequent... the PROVISIONS links below the blog links on the right are labels and things i like.. so you should check those out.
i read alot about music... i keep up with band members current projects... ive been into this kind of music since 1989, so i have a lot of history with keeping up with these things...
Pitchfork, though shitty as of late, has been of immense help.
and of course, the Pure Volume forums have proved an incredible source. the people there have diverse tastes... you should join up and bullshit with us.. Papstar is on there as well as Jeff and Sweet Baby Jaysus...
either way. keep coming back, keep commenting and enjoy..
Seriously these dudes are just wow. If I had any cash I'd pay to suck these dudes off.
whore.
I find out about these bands through a variety of ways.
1. I buy most of the shit I have on my computer at least in some form (vinyl mostly anymore) and theres almost always thank yous and liner notes.
2. I'm a recluse with a minimal social life to speak of so I spend a LOT of time talking about music on purevolume and finding new bands off friends lists on myspace and purevolume.
3. Most of my friends either have 5+ years in the hardcore/punk/indie community and know more than me so I'm constantly finding new good music. I'm finding myself to be in the 5+ years category anymore too.
4. I used to book shows, so a lot of times bands will just ask for a show and I'll set it up based on a few tracks off of myspace and even though I'm broke they usually give me a cd for the troubles.
That being said about their polished nature, I think for their current style if they were any grittier they'd lose a lot of the epic melodic parts of their music which is what makes me love them the dynamics between the punk roots and the somewhat indie/emo/post rock melodies. I am super excited for this full length though.

When someone said Van Zwam I didn't have my glasses on and I read it as Zangief and it made me want to play street fighter.
