Bad Brains - Live @ CBGB 1982
I bet a lot of you have seen this footage before but its Friday and I was listening to Bad Brains this morning on the subway and when Supertouch / Shitfit came on I got excited, knowing full well that it has one of the best hardcore breakdowns ever. This in turn reminded me of the DVD which is amazing. It is footage from 3 shows around X-mas time in 1982.
The part in particular that I thought of is naturally the breakdown. Around 1:50 in, during the second breakdown, watch the kid on stage do this mega stomp. It is hilarious and awesome, and I can totally feel the energy that he is getting off the song. I wish you could see his face better while he stomps across the stage. He has the ultimate look of ecstasy and fury, presented in a grimace of epic proportion. Dr Know looks cooler than anyone on the planet and HR is in his best form. The rest of the video is astonishingly awesome with a ton of great crowd shots of people going off. It's been a long time since I've been to a show where people go off that much, and even then, I think anything from early CBGB years trumps the most insane of the shows I've been too.
Well, I wanted to just post Supertouch but I couldnt find that on you tube so you get this instead, which is part 2 of 5 segments on youtube. You can go check those out, but the quality isnt that great, so if you have the notion, I would suggest searching out this DVD as its a wholly worthy way to spend an hour.
Click the cover to head to Amazon if you care to purchase this awesome snapshot of one of the best hardcore bands to ever exist. Its only $14.99, so your guaranteed to get your moneys worth.

Also, Chino Hordes song 'Arson' is one of the finest punk songs ever written... Can I get a "Hell Yes!"

I have this dvd on my puter somewhere...it is a really great look into these shows that many of use weren't even old enough to go to. Thanks for reminding me to watch it again, I can show it my 4 yr old, who is now, along with my 2 yr old daughter, turning my office into a circle pit. Definitely a site to see.
That is amazing Paps!! Dammnit, film it and youtube your kids circle pitting to Bad Brains!!!
haha!!
you know, thats not a bad idea...the girl gets pretty wild with the high kicks, would make great video to embarrass her with one day.
Bad Brains - best HC band ever!
Wow, finally, I have that off my chest!
(Maybe I should do like Cicero, but instead of finishing all my comments with "Cetero censeo Catharginem delendam esse!", I'd say "Bad Brains - best HC band ever"...).
But you know what is really good? The guitar solo in "Big Takeover" (Attitude/Roir sessions version). It kicks in at about 2.10 and lasts probably less than 10s, but it sends chills down my spine very single time. If someone ever does a thread about "best guitar solos in HC", this would be my answer. None of the later versions of that song (or any of the songs featured on that tape) can match the raw energy from that session.
So in closing, fellow senators, I'd like to remind you: "Bad Brains - best HC band ever!"
I'd vote for Bad Brains c. 1982 for president...
The only problem with that is that there would be even less separation of church and state than there is now.
Cetero censeo, Bad Brains - best HC band ever!
this is true, but everyone would be high as shit so no one would really care.
^_~
keep up the good work Cicero!
the only thing i would complain about a bad brains presidency would be the rampant homophobia/sexism (all part of the rastafairan beliefs) and their self-imposed curse to fuck themselves as soon as things were in their favor. but i could totally stand behind a get high platform.
yeah... i see what youre getting at. fuck all that lame ass racist homophobe sexist bullshit.
lets all get high and hug!
Talking about their (implicit rastafarian) homophobic beliefs: This is a great segue to one of my other favorite HC bands - GO! (Yeah, I am definitely schizophrenic that way...). Anyone remember their song "Holy Roller", where the openly gay Mike B.S. takes on the Bad Brains for their homophobia? "Eat shit dreadlocked motherfucker..." It's a great song, really. But apart from that: Cetero censeo, Bad Brains - best HC band ever!
Didn't GO! recently do some reunion shows? I thought I heard that. And even though I loved them and have their complete collection of 7"s and splits, I think a reunion is not needed. But aside from that, GO! were awesome. All the one second songs. haha.
Here you guys go, this is Rock for Light, the original mix. Before ric ocasek decided to fuck with the speed on the re-release of it, this was the original form of the album. I like both versions to be honest, but will always prefer the orginal mix, so here it is...

And I also should say that Bad Brains is without a doubt one of my favorite if not my favorite band. If you don't want to punch people in the face during The Big Takeover, you are not my friend..
bad brains hate gay people....or at least they did.....allegedly.
Jaysin - GO! did reform in 2007 for a little while, but apparently that has run its course already. They released 2 new EPs in that time and it's pretty good stuff, just like old times. Mike B.S. still sells the records and t-shirts through his webpage and a MySpace page. I always wondered about the Bad Brains homophobia allegation, though. I have seen some some interviews of H.R. where he sidesteps the issue and says something along the line of "we love everybody...". I have never found any direct evidence in their lyrics for homophobia (I think people always use these cryptic anti-AIDS lines from "Don't blow bubbles" as evidence...). On the other hand I wasn't a part of that NYC scene and never talked to those crazy guys; so I'd assume (hope) that Mike B.S. and others knew why they would attack the Brains on this specific issue, apart from being religious nut jobs.

lucifer, check out the book American Hardcore: A Tribal History, it breaks down the whole Bad Brains vs. Big Boys bout as told by those who lived through it. it's pretty disturbing.

"knowing full well that it has one of the best hardcore breakdowns ever"
could not agree more. it's just ridiculously heavy.
tim, the portraits shirt arrived!! it's perfect. thank you so much dude, you made my day!
yes!! awesome! glad you like it. was the 7" in good shape? i tried to pack it so everything was safe.
yeah, the 7" is perfect, the shirt is even better, and the button and stickers were icing on the cake. thanks again so much.
verd up!!
i'd just like to point out there has been quite the shortage of "emo" talk. i'm not pointing any fingers, i'm just making a statement.
I, for one, did not have any time for "emo" talk lately because I am so sad, plus I lost my eyeliner, which didn't help.
well as long as it is being practiced. i just didn't want to think i was the only one crying myself to sleep at night because the sun went down.

that's the "let's go get a burrito and listen to infest face" btw.

sup Gabba!

jared tells me there really is only four tracks on the new WCSL record - http://last-train-tocool.blogspot.com/2008/09/who-calls-so-loud-who-calls-so-loud.html. I'll still probably buy it though, the double is just so good.
check out my post and the lengthy artistic discussion of Scott Sinclair at the end ;)
Gabba, i stand totally corrected. I am loving 3 of 4 of those songs... Lark vs. Rascal is very very good..
